For $28 AU per night for two people with a car and tent in Paestum, Italy, I recommend you give this place a look. It’s one of those camping places you’ll never forget.

Cleanliness: 3/5

First up, in the summer, expect to be the only english-speaking people in the whole packed campsite. But this is what you want, right?! You’ll be camping with dozens of Italian families on holiday. From wherever you setup your tent, it is literally a stone-throw to the waves of the ocean, and the beach is a sandy-paradise and runs for kilometers. Internet is free, pizzas are reasonably priced and tasty and the mini-market, bar and restaurant are great.

I hate to say this, but Sicily in general is a little… edgy. You’ll feel safe here though and there’s a friendly family environment. The next-door neighbors noticed we didn’t have a table and chairs, and although we didn’t speak the same language, they lent us their spare ones. Everyone was friendly. You can walk a few kilometers down the road (we drove) and you’ll find the Paestum Ruins, which are thousands of years old and not very well guarded, so you can get right up and close.
